Scoop Friday: Fox Meadows Creamery – Pumpkin Baked Fox

With Labor Day crossed off our calendars, the majority of our country continues to fall for the major retailer propaganda that summer has concluded. While they break out their favorite flannel in ninety-degree weather, I’ll continue my favorite summer activities of enjoying lots of ice cream and heading to the beautiful brown beaches along the mighty Susquehanna River. My summertime continued as I journeyed out to Ephrata to Fox Meadows Creamery for my next scoop of the season. Thanks to avid Ev Dog Blog Supporter Alec for the suggestion! When Mr. Crawford tells you where to travel for a frozen treat, you listen and follow through on it nearly four months later. During my voyage through Lancaster County, I marveled at the number of roadside farm stands promoting the early fall agenda with advertisements for every type of gourd imaginable.

I approached the display counter and had my gaze grabbed by an enticing orange option known as Pumpkin Crème Brûlée. At that moment, I realized that I too am a basic bitch at heart. I can’t deny that Autumn is easily my favorite season. Sports are at their apex as several leagues either return or start their postseason, my fall-scented candles emit a scent redolent of Trick-or-Treat nights ending in lucrative candy pillages, and honey, the morning air becomes crisper than an apple. Therefore, I can’t blame anyone for celebrating the start of this superior season a tad bit early. However, those Christmas zealots on November 1st that buy a tree and blare the same Mariah Carey on repeat need to hold their yuletide horses until after they get bored of hanging with their loved ones on Thanksgiving.

In an effort to satiate my #HappyHarvest appetite, I ordered the pumpkin roll version of their signature treat, the Baked Fox, with a scoop of the Pumpkin Crème Brûlée nestled within the roll. To complete this order, I placed a scented cinnamon stick in the pocket of my shorts and adorned a scarf of colorful leaves around my neck. After being handed my double dessert dish, I exited the modern, updated creamery interior and was greeted by a rural Eden of tranquility. The jovial screams of children playing on the well-maintained lawn drowned out the nearby highway. In my corner seat of the porch, I admired my treat in front of a vast field of crops under the watch of both a stereotypical-looking barn and a clear blue pre-dusk sky.

Thanks to my friend Laney for the kind mid-scoop greeting!

Despite the pumpkin roll portion possessing an airy yet flavorful presence, this Baked Fox’s outer shell lacked the love of one that’s made annually by a relative each November. I quickly regretted not ordering an extra scoop for an additional two dollars as the pumpkin roll started acting like Napoleon the pig from Animal Farm by hogging all the means of pro-delectableness.

Its size not only monopolized the plate, but it also started to melt the lone scoop. From the small amount I was served, the Pumpkin Crème Brûlée contained a solid taste with spices at the forefront of its flavor but lacked a pallet-penetrating pumpkin punch that tantalizes the tastebuds. I give credit to the pumpkin roll’s icing for providing a relishing respite from the double pumpkin pair.

Typically, I end a Scoop Friday review here, but as I strolled through the parking lot I noticed a herd of Holsteins across the street. I thanked them for their service and sacrifice to provide me with so many delectable scoops this summer. One cow in particular, a heifer I named Millie, connected with me on a personal level. I shuffled in one direction and she reciprocated the movement in a parallel motion. In that instant, for the first time ever, I considered stealing a cow. I completely ignored the logical transportation and lodging obstacles as I fantasized a reality of riding her on my 0.1 acres of land. Reality eventually kicked in as cars traveling fifty miles per hour passed between us. Eventually, I waved an emotional goodbye to my new friend and her grazing girlies before heading home to decorate my apartment and engulf its walls with different shades of orange.

Thank you queens!
