Scoop Friday: Reeser’s Soft Ice Cream – Black Raspberry & Vanilla Twist

Nothing follows up a York County hike better than a York County ice cream cone. While Reeser’s wasn’t originally on my radar for Scoop Friday locations to visit this Scoop Season, it admirably earned its spot after a bold act of altruism earlier this month. For those not living in the South Central PA region unaware of what happened, on the Fourth of July, as locals were consuming their tenth Miller Lite of the day and preparing to shoot off three fingers with a homemade M80, an unexpectedly powerful thunderstorm ravished the area. Left in its wake, the corpses of previously strong vibrant trees lifted from their roots and sprawled across the area’s busiest roads. Their amputated limbs laid on the knocked-down wires and turned off the power for over 250,000 residents. Among those to lose power for multiple days, and consequently, the precious contents in their freezers as well, were Reeser’s and yours truly. In a state of disarray and temperature-compromised product, the owners of Reeser’s put their customer’s frozen-treat-needs first and urged patrons to head to local competitors unaffected by the storm. On top of a Scoop Friday setting honor, Reeser’s has also gained my lifelong respect.

As all of this was transpiring, Ev Dog left his apartment’s freezer undefended, as he was away dog sitting for a German Shepherd already petrified by a bombardment of afternoon fireworks and high on her second tablet of Trazodone. The vulnerable contents of my freezer lacking power and someone to place them in a cooler perished at some point on Sunday evening. Among them, a bag of frozen corn, the two mini tacos remaining out of a microwavable six pack, and saddest of all, a full pint of Turkey Hill Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough were all tragically lost. To properly honor our recently dairy-departed dessert, I’ve been working on a new song titled “WE ARE COOKIE DOUGH”.

I walked up to the ordering window still smelling of my DEET-laden cologne from my time on the Rocky Ridge Trails. Despite gnats kamikazeing into my eyes over the prior two hours, my vision retained just enough sight to inspect the menu.

BANZEYE!

I ordered their special soft serve flavor of week in Black Raspberry in a cone, but to properly represent the Caucasian census data of Lewisberry, Pennsylvania, I made it a twist with vanilla. I find both black raspberry and the color purple (not the movie – Oprah, please don’t deplatform me) to be just okay, so my expectations were tempered.

While I’d never describe it as having the simple yet multidimensional rapport of a vanilla and chocolate twist soft serve, the black raspberry still held its own in a yin and yang dichotomy of sweet tart meeting sweet creamy. I appreciated the refreshing nature of a cone straddling in a neutral-resulting litmus test where the acidic black raspberry confronted the basic vanilla equally. However, nothing ever tasted profound beyond the standard soft serve vanilla or regular black raspberry taste.
